Council Vacancy

The 08/09 Division Council will elect a new council member at the Fall Meeting in Santa Fe, NM, October 4, 2008 to fill a vacant position created by Keith Brown's resignation effective immediately. The term to be filled is through the conclusion of the Annual Meeting in 2011. Nominations must be provided to the Division’s Secretary, Laura Farber 10 days prior to the Fall 2008 Council Meeting. She can be reached c/o ABA General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division, 321 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60654. The email address is genpractice@abanet.org; fax number is 312/988-5711. No special form of nomination is required, and self-nominations are acceptable.

Vacant Committee Chairs Appointments – 08/09

Appointment positions for chair of the Real Estate Law and Senior Lawyers committees are currently vacant. Robert Zupkus is seeking leadership immediately. Members of the Division who are interested in chairing either of the committees should contact the Division office at genpractice@abanet.org or (312) 988-5648.

Nominating Committee Positions

The Nominating Committee will meet during the 2008 Fall Meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 2 - 5 to nominate individuals for the positions of Division Vice Chair, Secretary and Members-At-Large of the Council. In accordance with §4.4 of the Bylaws, the Committee will nominate five Council Members-At-Large to serve four-year terms. Minority applicants are encouraged. The duties, terms of office, and eligibility requirements for each of the positions to be filled are outlined in the Division Bylaws.

Vacant Council Seat

The Division Council will meet during the 2008 Fall Meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico, October 5, 2008. In accordance with §4.4 of the Bylaws to fill a vacancy occurring in a Member-at-Large seat for the remainder of the unexpired term of the vacant seat by majority vote of the Council. The following members submitted their nomination for the vacancy created by Keith Brown’s resignation. The term to be filled is through the conclusion of the Annual Meeting in 2011.

SOLO Goes Electronic

SOLO, the Division’s diminutive eight–page newsletter, will soon see a change in format. It will be online–only starting with the fall 2008 issue. GPSolo Division members will receive notice of each issue by e–mail with a link to the online site. The look of the newsletter will also change; the online format will feature an easy’access list of articles and authors, as well as a downloadable pdf and other “quick click” links to past issues, Division information, and the opportunity to voice your comments on the newsletter via e–mail. The content, however —short articles that offer practical tips and advice for the solo and small firm lawyer— remains the same.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Educate and Serve Your Community; learn how to best help victims of domestic violence.
Recognize the signs of Domestic Violence. The Domestic Violence Checklist for Lawyers was developed by the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section Law in Public Service Committee and is provided to you jointly by GP|Solo (www.abanet.org/genpractice) and TIPS (www.abanet.org/tips) as a public service.

ABA’s New Zip Code

Effective July 1, 2008, The ABA’s new 321 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL, office zip code, will be 60654-7598.
Mail addressed to the old zip code, 60610, will continue to be delivered for one year after the change goes into effect.
