SEPTEMBER 17: Wrangling Over Water Rights
On September 17 at 1:00 p.m. ET, the ABA Connection is presenting a one-hour CLE teleconference titled, “Wrangling Over Water Rights”. As cities in the arid West continue to grow—and that includes many of California’s coastal cities, access to water is the dark cloud hanging over the horizon. But water is not a critical issue just in the West. The Southeast is still experiencing drought conditions, and there are concerns about dropping water levels in the Great Lakes, the primary source of fresh water in the United States. Under growing pressure from population growth, development, growing agricultural demands and uncertainty about the effects of climate change, the fight for water between cities, urban and rural areas, states and even nations is likely to easily match the competition for energy. And you can’t drink gasoline. This article and teleconference will explain how the legal fights over water are already developing in legislatures, regulatory agencies and the courts, at both the state and federal levels, and how those battles differ from region to region. Although the law has governed access to water for centuries the legal system may not be prepared to sort out the issues that are developing now. This is an important story for any lawyer, but especially those in the real estate and development fields, attorneys for government bodies and regulatory agencies, business lawyers, those working in the energy, resource and environmental fields, and litigators. The program is sponsored by the ABA Journal, Membership and Marketing, and the Center for Continuing Legal Education. CLE credit has been applied for in states that accept the teleconference format. To register, call the ABA at 800/285-2221 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern weekdays, or register online at http://www.abanet.org/cle/connection.html#schedule.
